Dr. Ivan Amerine

The Metroka Animal Hospital has a historical past. It is very possible that it is the oldest or at least one of the oldest Animal Hospitals still existing within its original walls. The hospital originally opened in 1932 with its original veterinarian Dr. Grey. The hospital was predominately a large animal facility. In those times horses and other farm animals had a greater value as compared to dogs, cats, and other small pets. In 1945 Ivan Amerine D.V.M. purchased the hospital from Dr. Grey and enjoyed a magnificent reputation throughout his thirty-nine year career. In his early years Dr. Amerine was predominately a large animal veterinarian, however by the end of his career the practice was predominately small animal. This transformation occurred as the value of veterinary service to the large animal community declined in the Sandusky area, at the same time small animal pet ownership grew exponentially creating a great demand for small animal veterinary services. In 1986 Michael E. Metroka D.V.M. purchased the practice from Dr. Amerine. He continues to practice at this hospital to this day. During the past twenty-two years the practice has transformed into a full service veterinary hospital.
